The following is from John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire':-October 20 1865. "The village of Garforth, near Leeds, was this evening the scene of much enlivenment and congratulation, in consequence of the soiree which took place in celebration of the opening of the Garforth Working Men's Club, &c. A building for the purpose had been built by Colonel F. T. C. Gascoigne, of Parlington, the principal landed proprietor in that neighbourhood. The room was lavishly and elegantly decorated. Mr. W. S. Atkinson, of Barrowby Hall, vice-president of the club, occupied the chair, and was supported by Lord Houghton, Lord F. Cavendish, M.P., Mr. G. L. Fox, Rev. Canon Atlay, D.D., Rev. J. T. B. Landon, Rev. J. Morton, F.R.A.S., Mr. D. Lupton, &c."I wonder how many of those definitely not working-class people ever set foot in that (or any other) Working Men's Club again?

I was thinking the same think Leodian.Just wondered if it is still there now? When I was a kid the village of Garforth seemedto be a place where people all owned their own houses. It also seemed to be out in the Country as well. This is a naive childs point of view. i.e. Childrenshould be seen and not heard laugh.

Hi ArmleyLass47. On googling (not painful!) there is a Garforth Working Men's Club but it seems to be a relatively modern building in photos. I don't know if the original building is stiil there.

Working Men's Clubs seem to spring up in the most unlikely locations. This is one in Bradford.......http://www.idleworkingmensclub.co.uk/
