The following are from John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire'.October 19 1816. "On October 19th, was opened the Leeds and Liverpool canal."That must be one of the shortest reports in the Annals! October 19 1865. "The foundation stone of the New Leeds Public Dispensary was laid this day by the Mayor. The site for the new Dispensary is a plot of ground situate in Belgrave Square, and abutting upon North Street...The building is estimated to cost £3500. The Corporation and other friends of the institution met in the Council-room of the Town Hall, at half-past three o'clock, and walked in procession to the site of the building. A handsome blue banner, on which was inscribed "Leeds New Dispensary", was borne in front of the procession, which was headed by the excellent band of the Leeds Volunteer Rifle Corps...".The building is still there, but is currently for sale (unless it has already been sold). I wonder if the "handsome blue banner" is archived somewhere?

Really interesting snippets of news Leo, my Grandfather lived in a house alongside 'the cut' that bypassed Castleford centre and weir, and rejoined the Aire & Calder opp. Hickson & Welch.I also received quite a few 'stitches' at the dispensary. Saturday nights would be spent, by our family at the RAOB club, North St. just opp. the dispensary.

In what must have been the 1970's I used to go to a folk club nights that were held in that RAOB club. I particularly recall the steep steps upstairs and a cramped room. Tony Capstick was there on one visit.

I well remember steep spiral steps that lead up from the concert/meeting room, I learned how to 'snog' with a girl (I hasten to add) on them. My father invited me to join the 'Buffs' when I was older but I declined having had enough of the Church Lads Brigade. - I wanted Freedom!
