The following are from John Mayhall’s 'Annals of Yorkshire':-October 12 1782. “On the 12th of October, the 51st, or 2nd West York regiment of foot, commanded by the earl of Eglintoun (sic), arrived in Leeds from Minorca, in the celebrated defence of which they had been honourably engaged.”This is presumably related to information that I've found, which is of a British defeat. There was a Franco-Spanish conquest of Minorca from its British defenders in February 1782 that ultimately resulted in the ceding of the island to Spain in the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Minorca was recaptured by the British in 1798 but returned to Spain in 1802.October 12 1858. “About 3,000 colliers in the neighbourhood of Leeds struck work, in consequence of a proposed reduction by the masters of 15 per cent from their wages. The strike did not terminate until December, when the men submitted to a reduction of 7½ per cent.”
