I took this photo today (Sept 7 2012) of a road sign on New Market Street looking towards Vicar Lane. I am confused as to what low bridge it refers to, as the sign's location means it will be for drivers coming off Duncan Street. The sign looked to be firmly fixed but if someone has deliberately moved it round then the sign would surely be on the wrong side of the road and also the arrow would be pointing in the wrong direction for vehicles intending to go down Call Lane (where there is a bridge) as the arrow should be vertical (indicating straight ahead). The arrow cannot surely mean to enter the pedestrianised bit of Kirkgate as even if a vehicle did and then turns left onto Briggate it still has to go on Duncan Street to get to Call Lane. I suspect I may be missing something obvious to others here!

I think it is either fixing contractor's error or some playful scamp has turned it.I'm sure it refers to the bridge 'straight ahead' down Call Ln.I seem to recall (or did I dream it) that Vicar Ln/New Market St was all one-way southbound. So the sign would be correct side, albeit facing wrong way.ttfn

Only "low" bridge I can deduce would be at the bottom of Harrison St.next to the Travelodge up towards the Grand, but you wouldn't be able to access this against the flow of traffic from the point you photographed ? (One way from Eastgate backwards).....I'm sure somebody will enlighten us soon. Can't be Calls.....distance too short.

Is there a footbridge over the precinct somewhere between there and Albion St?

The low bridge is on the pedestrian precinct. The sign is to warn delivery drivers of the new low bridge on Albion street. This is the new bridge on the trinity project. There is a option to turn right up Albion street before the bridge if a driver makes a mistake. The no entry signs have been covered to allow a escape route. Before someone asks the entry to this bridge on the pedestrian precinct is Duncan street , new market street , kirkgate , commercial street , and a left turn into Albion street. But don't attempt this before 10 am or you will get a lovely fine for going through the bus gate. Before 10am the entrance is up the side of the market kirkgate side.

Thanks all for your responses. I doubt I would have thought that the low bridge would be that on lower Albion Street that connects what was the Leeds Shopping Plaza (the developing Trinity Project) with the still there but being renovated Bond Street Shopping Mall (or whatever it's called!).

Thanks Whyme, but I'm still baffled - surely the figure of 460 yards is not correct then ?? Also, don't tell me that some highly paid professional has incorporated a 13'0" bridge into a new development where access by large tall delivery vehicles will be needed daily ?? Or have I just lost the plot ?? - it happens a lot these days !!

Oh Oh....yes indeed Blakey.Nothing would surprise me these days. Thanks Whyme(said somebody would know),glad I don't drive nowadays. The city centre is a minefield of obstacles, lane restrictions, parking restrictions, obscure(multiple)traffic signs, one way scratch your head roads(if not for strangers, residents too !),cameras, wardens, pedestrians stepping out in front of traffic(usually donned in headphones or staring blankly at mobile phones).....nightmare !p.s. just off into town.....On The Bus !!!
