SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

Occasionally I buy the "Yorkshire Ridings Magazine" and a four page article in the current (September 2012) edition caught my eye.It relates to Newlaithes Manor on Newlaithes Road in Horsforth which, it reports, is approximately 800 years old and is "in fact the oldest house in Leeds"and" had connections with the Pollard family who later moved across the river to Bramley".I wondered whether or not the subject of the oldest house in Leeds had been broached on SL previously and if so, which are the other contenders. I couldn't find a link with the search facility.Incidentally, I have no personal interest in this property at all but for anyone who has it is currently for sale through Dacre, Son and Hartley: a steal at £795,000. Whis house is oldest? I suppose only a Dendrochronologist would be able to confirm that!

JD Hi jdbythesea. I have read about Newlaithes on SL a few times and I believe Newlaithes Manor is rumoured to have a tunnel leading to Kirkstall Abbey, (apologies)..... A lot of property down the bottom of Horsforth Town Street, (towards The Green) dates way back. I used to work in the Post Office (old one near to the Kings Arms and the Kings Arms is the oldest pub in Horsforth so I've read). Anyway....back to your question. I have seen on the net the property you mention as, "ONE of the oldest properties in Horsforth,c1700". They do not claim it to be thee oldest though so I'm certainly not sure.

It was re-built as a manor house in the 16/17th centuries.It can't really be called a 800 year old house, but it's fascinating none the less.....
