The photo shows a pillar box in Leeds Station. I may have walked past this box very many times but I had never noticed it until a few days ago, so I went back and took this photo on July 21 2012. I appreciate that a thread about this box may be of no interest to many (hopefully not all) SL readers but there may be others who have also never really noticed this box!

Ha ha, I have visions of candid camera, or beadles about when it gets up and walks off

It looks as though it has been placed there after the revamp of this part of the station. It does look a bit out of place.

I couldn't agree more - it will be invisible to most station users, either heading straight out to New Station Street and the (don't laugh) transport interchange or shielded by the ticket office wall to anyone exiting through the art deco hall. What a waste - mind you, I would have thought the station would make an ideal location for a small Post Office as there isn't one at all on that side of Leeds any more.

Hi raveydavey You are so right a small post office would do well in the station people comeing into Leeds must find it hard to find a post office. A post box is allright but if you need to buy stamps or post cards to send home it would be a bit of a bind, unless there are places in the station you can buy this sort of thing.

What with the increasing number of passengers using the station, I think that the Post Office is missing out on an awful lot of business in that part of town.Personally, I think a great site for a new Post Office would be in City Square. I don't suppose the idea will ever catch on though ?JD

I believe that at one time, letters posted at the station (and it was most major stations) would be put straight on the mail train if they were on time, so that a letter could be posted up until the time the train departed or passed through. These days all mail goes to the sorting office so the railway station mail box is a bit of an anachronism but handy for posting mail if you commute.

I walk past this part of the station a few times a week and have never noticed it there ,there used to be a postbox outside Marks and Spencers further down ,at the side.I am surprised that there's a postbox actually inside the station for the same reason as there are no litter bins.

I've used that handy post box many a time, and been glad of it. However I must say that its extremely dangerously placed so near those steps - if you're concentrating on reading the "time of last collection" plate its easy to come a cropper as you walk away
