The following is reported on John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire' vol 1.July 7 1853. "The Leeds town council resolved to purchase a piece of land lying between North-street and Camp-road, for a sum not exceeding £5,200, "to be used in future as a cattle market, it being intended to remove the cattle fair from Kirkgate market as suggested by a committee of the house of commons." The first cattle market was held on the new site on Wednesday the 13th of July."In another cattle item on July 7th in volume 1 this is reported:-July 7th 1806. "A fortnight fair for fat cattle and sheep was established at Otley, on July 7th."So no thin cattle allowed then!     

Hi Leodian. I know North street but think Camp Road is long gone. I can only think the area must have been a smelly place to be. As for your remark re thin cattle...it reminded me of a guy who used to drive around Halifax in an american open top car. He'd written across the back of the car, "No Thin Chicks". Must say, Halifax is the only place I've seen a Robin Reliant with a trailer....I had to laugh!

Hi Leodian. I was ages on google and Leodis last night looking up the area your thread mentions.Leodis has an aerial view of the city centre which is undated. It shows North Street continuing to Vicar Lane and says North Street Park, (Lovell park) was the site of Smithfield cattle market until 1886. The area was then available to the public as a park from 1888 and access to the north was from Camp Road.Camp Road is now Oatland Lane leading to Lovell Park Road.I really enjoyed educating myself but will blame you for my late night...lol

Hi Caron. Old photos of Leeds in the Leodis website are (mostly) extremely interesting but finding them can take a lot of time (usually worthwhile though).
