This is reported in John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire' vol I.June 29 1842:-'An important meeting of the shopkeepers and tradesmen of Leeds, was held in the Court-house "to enable them publicly to make known the unparalleld distress which prevailed in the borough, and the gradual decay of trade consequent thereon; and to adopt such measures relative thereto as might be deemed advisable, regardless of all party considerations, with a view to avert impending ruin."'This is all very similar to trading nowadays with so many premises vacant, such as in Leeds City Market and most (if not all) other parts of Leeds.
