The following news items are taken from John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire'.June 19 1845. "The new burial ground for the township of Hunslet, situate at Woodhouse-hill, was opened. The ground was provided by the town council, under the provisions of an act passed in 1842, entitled, "An Act for providing additional burial grounds in the parish of Leeds, in the West-Riding of the county of York." The cost was about £6,000, and comprises about ten acres. One-half is consecrated for the use of the established church. The Rev. Edward Wilson, B. A., is the chaplain of the consecrated portion, and the Rev. A. Pickles of the unconsecrated portion."The next item is long but I thought (hope!) it may be of interest so I've reported it all.June 19 1871. "At a meeting of the Leeds Town Council, a large sum was granted for completing various improvements in the borough. For making a new thoroughfare from York Street to East Street, and the extension of Kirkgate Market, (this rendering necessary the demolition, amongst other property, of twenty-seven low lodging-houses, which had long been known as the hot-beds of fever,) a sum not exceeding £67,500 was granted. For widening Call Lane on the west side £7,500 was allowed; £1,020 for widening the corner of Call Lane and the Old Rotation Office Yard; £2,500 for the purchase of land (2,249 square yards), including the York Tavern, in York Street; £1,000 for 350 yards for the widening of Woodhouse Lane on the east and west sides; and £25,000 for the property required for the improvement of Duncan Street. It was recommended that a sum not exceeding £30,000 should be voted for the purchase of the property known as Quebec, for widening the street opposite the Wellington Station, but after some discussion this was referred back to the committee."I wonder what the Old Rotation Office was?
