This photo (which I took on May 29 2012) shows an easily missed inscription just on Albion Place of the River Island shop at the junction of Albion Place and Lands Lane. I will have walked past it many times but the inscription only very recently caught my eye. It reads "The dome on this tower was set in position by Mr. A. P. Rose on 7th August 1981. Architects Gillinson Barnett and Partners".The interesting looking stone looks like marble to me because though it could be granite the inclusions seem too rounded for it to be that based on my admittedly very limited knowledge of geology!I will post a view showing the tower in my next post in this thread.

This is the view taken from Lands Lane showing the dome on top of the building. In the curved feature a little to the right of the dome it states "1981".

It is polished red granite from Scandinavia, Leo. If memory serves, the inclusions are quartz, feldspar and mica. The Yorkshire Bank building behind the Merrion Centre was clad with it. I think it was an architecturally trendy material in the 80s.

Cheers Si. I did say my geology knowledge was limited! It is a nice looking finished stone.

Bruno wrote: Sorry Leodian,It was supposed to be a geology related pun (bolder/boulder).I'll get me coat... Oops red-faced me. I'm usually good at spotting puns but I completely missed that one! I genuinely thought it was just a comment on the poor readability quality of the inscription in the photo, as I had been unsure about doing this thread because of that. I'll get me coat and go with you Bruno.
