This photo (taken today May 29 2012) is one of two similar small objects on the side of the pavement on the left side of Harrogate Road shortly after passing M&S at Moortown Corner area (going out of Leeds). They are marked GPO and I think (but am unsure) that they may be old markers of where telephone cables once were or perhaps still are. This one has 17 on it and based on the nearby marker that may be 17 feet.I don't know if such General Post Office (GPO) markers are common but they were unusual enough to catch my attention recently, which is why I went today to take the photos.

This is the other GPO marker that is a few yards away a bit closer to M&S. This marker seems to have lost a number where the other has 17 but it shows 'Ft' which is hidden or not on the other marker.

Just been on your other thread and seen the link to this .

These are what are known as coupling markers. These are for telephone cables and the markers do show the distance in feet to the coupling, These couplings usually were situated where a proper access box could be situated usually due to other services but the cable need connecting to another cable, the cable was jointed and the coupling fitted. Initially these were wooden but evolved to concrete.
They are still current and in use.

Thanks for that information billy :).

The more that I look around the more of them I am spotting, though many do seem damaged. I wonder if any of the wooded ones survive?

Hi Brunel. Could you please supply the link to that thread as I have been unable to readily at least find the thread on a search.

It was that thread that sparked my interest in OS bench marks. And, by the way Brunel, you were right - as always, about it being a cable marker, and I was so very wrong!
