A good song and clearly a talented lad.The video had a brief shot of the statue of Ernie Wise (his home town was Morley but he was born in Bramley). He died on March 21 1999 so it is already 13 years since Ernie died. Eric Morecambe died on May 21 1984, so that is already 28 years ago. Time does fly.

Other more prominent Morleians would have to be H.H.Asquith(ex p.m.),Sir Titus Salt,Donald Nielsen(infamous as Black Panther) and me of course (but wouldn't like to categorise at this particular juncture).

Somebody once said to me "Morley's all shoddy 'n full o'holes"......I'd like to think he was referring to it's industrial heritage in mills and mining.

As well as being one of the people who put Morley CC on the map and in the process becoming arguably the greatest woman cyclist to ever set foot on the planet, Beryl never made it to the Olympic Games.Womens cycling began at the Olympics with the road race in 1984. Track events began for women at the next Olympiad in 1988.Beryl used to beat most of the men when she was in her pomp. Mens cycling has been included in every games of the modern era. Pity that GB could not pick her for the mens team. Right place, wrong time for an iconic sportswoman.

Beryl is one of my 'unsung sporting heros'.It is also ok to talk of her here on these Leeds pages(unlike my other unsung cycling hero / legend - Tommy Godwin BORN 1912 who in 1939 broke the Cycling Year Record on a steel Raleigh Record Ace with Sturmey Archer 4 speed hub:-"On 26 October 1939 Godwin rode into Trafalgar Square having completed 62,658 mi (100,838 km), gaining the record with two months to spare. He rode through the winter to complete 75,065 mi (120,805 km) in the year.In May 1940 after 500 days' riding he secured the 100,000-mile (160,000 km) record as well. Godwin dismounted and spent weeks learning how to walk before going to war in the RAF"

Our geography teacher described the geography of Morley as "'ills, mills and fish 'oils" He wasn't far wrong at the time. The 'ills are still there, the mills have gone, and most of the fish 'oils are Chinese takeaways! (who eats all this Chinese food?)
