Strong Cheese

Risk here of me going nostalgic for Lewis's Food Hall.Strong cheese, smelly cheese, Leeds cheese? doesn't have to be blue cheese. I've tracked down a good strong french soft cheese from Normandy. Morrisons have it So good was it on taste and smell (odour of a man on a long pilgrimage) that Mrs J got cross and now it's a banned substance. Any recommendations - shops or product (ps I don't want to breach SL codes- Moderator do I risk being pulled ?)

For sheer parfum de farmyard, you can't beat Epoisses. I can even smell it just looking at the picture.They used to serve it at La Grillade when it was on Infirmary Street. I think they sell it in M&S. PS When I was a kid, I developed a taste for Danish Blue bought from Lewis's and eaten on digestive biscuits (strange child.)

Jogon and Sitotally agree with you, you cant beat a bit of ripe camembert, its banned in our house. We go to France regular and my first stop is always the fromagerie for some Pont Leveque or similar, cant keep inside though, we brought some back from Normandy last year, double insulated in freezer bags and it still stank the car out.

I like a hard strong cheese this type of cheese you will not find in France.All French cheese is soft i have been to France on holiday quite a few times and allways take hard cheese with me eg stilton or danish blue but that is just my taste. There is nothing wrong with French soft cheese but its not for me.As an after thought you could not buy sliced bacon in France so took this as well.
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

Epoisse = cheese of evil.You store an opened piece of it in a fridge at your peril, or maybe you like everything tasting of Epoisse.If you are careful, store it for just long enough before it actually goes off - not always easy to tell BTW - and it becomes extremely pongy and also it flows instead of needing to be cut.In this condition, you can't eat much of it - so call up a few like minded souls and get some strong tasting red wines - or fortified wine and have a sociable time

I have nothing against French cheese but I prefer English or Danish blues or a nice aged Dutch. Picked up a lovely piece of aged Dutch in Amsterdam once, was very hard and a little oakey tasting, lovely.For an unusual cheese (for a Brit at least) I developed a liking for brun ost (a sweet, brown goat's cheese) from Norway.Having said that about the French cheese I do like a bacon and brie sandwich.
