A friend asked why the Meadow Lane gas holders were painted with a 2 tone blue design so I thought I would pass on this little snippet. The blue painted sections symbolise a gas flame as the holder rises so does the flame. So there you go another piece of vital information or not ; )

The holders across the City seem to rise and fall less and less these days.

As big as they look they throw very little pressure so electric boosters have to be used. Most of what looks like rust on them making them look so bad is actually oil from the water seals around each cup.

That thread has brought back a lot of memory’s as I worked on gad holder stations for a long time and I remember all of the Leeds sites. My favourite site used to Calverley it was between the Leeds and Liverpool canal and the river Aire. The canal feed the first spiral holder with water for the seals and certain people used to buy kids fishing nets to rescue fish from the cups. The holders were all due for decommissioning but some of them were saved as there was insufficient gas storage in the system and I imagine that’s why they are still working now.

Hi TykeI worked for the holder maintenance dept for about 5 years my favorite holder was Settle, Keighley holder also had fish in the cups.No2 holder at meadow lane was the worst to work on as it was column guided and had a vertical ladder with no back rest it was about 200ft high when full. This was before they modified the access so now column holder ladders have resting stages and back rests on them.
