I took this photo today (March 30 2012) of these protruding blocks in a wall next to a track on Otley Chevin. The blocks look as if they could be steps but if so why do they not go all the way up? Unfortunately in my surprise to see them I forgot to look on the other side of the wall so I don't know if the blocks protrude out on that side, though that side seems to be just rough ground.

Looks like steps. No need for them to go any higher as once someone is on the top step they could swing their leg over. The ground on the other side looks higher so maybe no need to have any on the other side.

Mounting blocks but why two.?

I suspect it's an old stile -- I think I've seen similar elsewhere and wondered why there were two sets of steps.

Hi leoNot been up there for many years, seem to recall some old building / park keepers cottage in the midst of it.Yes looks like steps, often used a long stone which would protrude as much other side too. Looks like it will get twice as many folk over or 'cater for left-footers'.?Been planning some walks recently + Chevin popped up in conversation this morn. Also fancy Grass Wood + Grassington, pleasant bus ride.

I know there are said to be deer in that area but in my many walks around there I had never seen any deer, until today. Just after getting into the estate from the A660 I saw a group of 4 or 5 small deer that had pronounced whitish rears. From information that I've now seen the're likely to be roe deer.There is a small pond high up near to the West Chevin end. After looking for several minutes I only saw 3 tadpoles in the pond. However, just as I was going away I spotted some small areas of very shallow water that had hundreds of tadpoles. The taddies were clearly in a precarious position as there was virtually no water connection to the main pond and the water they were in barely covered them. I would guess that another day or so of dry weather and the water where they were will have dried up. I tried to make a channel into the main pond for them in the mud but just ended getting my hands covered in mud. The photo (taken March 30 2012) shows a small lot of taddies in one area. It will be a shame if they die due to the water drying up, but that is nature.    

Horse mounting steps.Depends which way you are going as to which set of steps you'd use.If they were to get over the wall, there would be a top flat stone.Now why would you be mounting your horse there? dunno, but you see mounting steps in all sort of places for no obvious reason.

Maybe there was a house there and after dismounting the horses were stabled and there was a short walk to the house for the riders?
