I know this reply is almost 3 years late but I've just finished Jason Robinson's autobiography (which was a very good read incidentally). In it he mentions that he was born at Calforth Street in Chapeltown in 1974 but then moved to Harehills, then Leek Street Flats, Ingleton Street and to Tremont Gardens. The schools he mentions having attended were Cross Flatts and later Matthew Murray. The change of name from Brannan came about when his mother, Dorothy, acquired a new partner - one Richard Robinson.

You're probably right LS1. The book I was quoting from had several place names that were spelled incorrectly; one of them was "Crossflats"for instance.

Sons of Leeds, or famous sons of Leeds? I discovered the following two 'famous' sons of Leeds while trying to find out a bit more about a forthcoming W&W.I had heard of both of the following people whose names I am submitting for this thread. One in his own right but the other only after the running race which was - and still is, apparently - named after him. I had no idea that both gentlemen were born in Leeds.I remember as a youngster watching the Emsley Carr Mile from the White City on Saturday afternoon on Grandstand. My most vivd memory of those days is of a bloke called Bruce Tulloch running barefoot on the cinder track. I am surprised to find that he never won it. Although when I think about it maybe he never entered. I seem to remember he was more of a three mile and six mile specialist.Anyway, enough of Bruce Tulloch. He's from Berkshire. I've just looked it up.Back to Emsley Carr, who was born in 1867 in Hunslet. Sadly, that seems to be about all that can be gleaned on his Leeds background from the interweb. Pirie enjoyed victories over both Zatopek and Kuts during a career in which he broke five world records and competed at two Olympic Games, winning a silver at Melbourne in 1956.He also collaborated with a German called Adolf Dassler on the design of running shoes. Wonder whatever happened to him? The German I mean.Neither Emsley or Gordon have figured in this thread before.
