I've just been using Google Earth for an area I thought I knew well, so I was very surprised to see a pool that I never knew of! Wow I thought that must be one well hidden pool. It took my a while to realise that the blue looking 'pool' is actually the car parking area off Stairfoot Lane before reaching Stairfoot Lane Bridge coming from Alwoodley. This link should show what caused me confusion:-

Another problem is that, even on google earth, gradients are not always apparent. I thought I was old enough and savvy enough to know better now but still end up walking up inclines I had not expected whilst exploring.

Perhaps not just me who needs new glasses then..For some time on google earth it looked like there was a white Cessna 'plane parked on Otley Chevin. It must have been below the photo 'plane or satellite (or however they do it) as it photo'd from above.Relevant to this thread:-At Adel/Stairfoot there is York Gate the house & gardens. At the back of Otley Chevin the road by the Royalty Pub is Yorkgate.Any relation or just a name?

The gardens at York Gate in Adel are only about 15 minutes walk from where I live but I've never been in them! Though much can be seen from walking past it is said to be a very interesting garden to walk around. I must go round on one of the open days.Is the Royalty near Otley Chevin open as I thought it closed down during last year?

leoYork Gate is actually worth a visit in good weather. Feels bigger when you're in there. It was used for a photo location of a Morgan ( I think) on the front of a weekend Telegraph Motoring section I saw a while back.

I think the name Yorkgate may refer to the Roman road which ran (presumably from York) through Adel, crossing Cookridge Lane, and then along the back of the Chevin on it's way to Olicana (Ilkley.) The modern road of York Gate is not on the exact same alignment, being nearer to the top of the Chevin.
