Used to adore a slice of hot fresh baked from a near by baker when I was little, the smell filled the air for quite away early morning - Vinands on the Melbourne Parade York Road - long gone and now Rose's Diner and Leeds Car Audio. Adjacent Nosh In Indian takeaway well recommendedAnother favourite also long gone was Slacks Bakers, corner Station Road/Green Lane - now an undertakers

ooooooo yes i remember slacks in xgates, their sandwiches were great too. Another bakers i loved was christines in starbeck near harrogate where my anty used to live. I love bread, not the puddingy bread that is mass produced but the real bread baked onsite. Next best thing these days is Asdas Tiger bloomer ( dont confuse with morrisons tiger bloomer its just not the same)

The Continental deli on the Market top row takes some beating for large white loaves, and the stotties from Firth and Payne are great. When I worked in Leeds I bought a stottie (oven bottom) and a quarter of ox tongue from Todds, perfect with a spread of mustard.

I really miss Rudges - they had a branch on the Pendas at Cross Gates staffed by two ladies of a certain age who made some of the finest sandwiches around. Proper oven bottom cakes (new cakes) as well. They had another branch at Halton.

That made by my Mum up to probably the early 1960s when it just became not really worth home baking. The bread could not be any fresher, though it had to be eaten soon as its freshness would soon go and any left for a couple or so days would go off with the blue mould (though that was also a problem with bought bread then).
