my mother worked in munitions in Leeds in ww2. I believe it was the Barnbow factory. Her name was Joyce Morley. If anyone has any information or knew anyone who worked there, I would be grateful for the information. Thanks, jeffeyre.

There is a report on page 8 of the YEP today about the explosion at Barnbow 95 years ago today on December 5 1916 which killed 35 women workers. In the report it states "the East Leeds History and Archaeology Society is planning to renovate a memorial to the victims on Cross Gates Road, which was installed in 2005". In the report it also states "Barnbow was Britain's top shell factory during the First World War and produced a total of 566,000 tons of ammunition, which was shipped overseas. The factory opened in December 1915 and by October the following year, there were 16,000 people working on the site".

The memorial was built at thr old tram terminus just before the roundabout Leodian, on the site of the demolished public toilet block. Sadly like so much, it has been neglected. There should be a picture in the main Barnboe thread I think, and possibly on Leodis.

I wonder, had looked less like the lumps of rock used to deter the parking of caravans, would it have become so “neglected”.
