I was reading the Leodis signs link from SI about a sign opposite Weegman's butchers in Otley. Got me thinking about butchers in general but about pork pies in particular. I haven't had a decent one since moving away from Leeds over 6 years ago. Always got one (or too) when in Otley. Weegman's pies are a bit special.Going a long way further back Addyman's pies were OK too but then, of course, they later suffered tremendously with a food health scare and the bad publicity put them out of business I seem to recall (when was that?). Anyone else have their own favourites?

Thanks Raveydavey, I missed that link. Newton's pies - I'd forgotten them and I used to buy them when I worked at Woodhead's on Kirky Road back in '65!

hi raveydayey, the talk of porkpies, the best shop in leeds was todd's, but it was closed down because of salmonella. the second best now is wakefield, near to the bus station, but since they built the new roads and made them a one way system, i cant find my way in. the other pork pie shop is hoffmans, they are also mouth watering, and filled with lovely fresh pork and gravy.

Mmmmm. Hot pork pie with mushy peas and vinegar. Fattening yes, but yummy.

Tuskey, I can also remember Hoffman's pie shop (on Westgate in Wakey wasn't it?) Still there for all I know. It's 15 years or more since I visited it. Excellent texture and flavour. Real gourmet stuff.

I remember the Cardis "scandal" - their shop was on Lands Lane (I think where Whittards is today).Apart from Wilson's of Cross Gates, I can't find a decent pork pie in Leeds but when I'm in Skipton I buy one from Stanforth's, and yesterday I had a lovely pork and rhubarb pie from a shop in Hebden Bridge

They are still listed as a going business. An incident involving a different product does however ring a bell.
