Just to add to Phil's timely message, after a one year absence Barwick in Elmet Historical Society will be giving guided tours of the earthworks, constructed in Iron Age and Norman times on Friday and Saturday 9 & 10 September. The tours will start from Hall Tower Field, just round the corner from the Maypole and very close to the bus stop (64 Aberford) at the Gascoigne Arms.On Friday the tours will start at 14.00 and then half hourly to 1600. On Saturday they will start at 11.00 and half hourly to 12.30 then recommence at 14.00 and half hourly to 16.00. There will be a small sales stall in Hall Tower Field. Please note that there are sheep grazing in Hall Tower Field and no dogs can be allowed. Visitors should wear stout footwear and be able to climb steep steps and stiles. Tours will last just over one hour.Open for viewing at similar times to the earthworks is All Saints' Church with its Anglo-Norse stones and recent alterations. The church will not be open over lunch-time on the Saturday.

I did 'the tour' the other year, with the kids, and found it very interesting (and a nice walk too!)

If it is still there the tall chimney will probably still have LICS on it. With little means of washing and drying heavy and/or more than a few items at home people used to bring their 'bag wash' to be cleaned. A very busy place until its need began to reduce. I can't recall when it closed as a laundry.

I can't recall a CWS there but that's not to say there wasn't one. There was a CWS shop on Osmondthorpe Lane just off York Road (it had a butchers that faced York Road). It also had a cold milk store on Rookwood Avenue immediately next to the shop.

Grand Theatre, Holbeck guided walk and, if time permits but doubtful, Thwaite Mills. There are many fascinating opportunities to be enjoyed.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
