SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

I thought I'd add the link to this set of online Leeds City Council conservation documents on a new thread in Secret Leeds. I found them very interesting, with lots of valuable history and info. The documents are very good and go into some detail with colour photos too. Viewing is recommended, and I'm sure they will come in handy for Secret Leeds.

Thanks Phill - these will make fascinating reading and the basis of a few self-guided walks for me around parts of Leeds I'm not familiar with!Expanding on the research theme, I wonder if it's worth starting a new section on Secret Leeds where people can add their own sources of information on Leeds. We must all trawl the Web on a regular basis and find obscure bits of information which don't merit a thread of their own, but which SL members and people who just view this site would find interesting.For example, I have bookmarks to a history of Lands Lane (with great photos and detail), an autobiography of someone who lived in Leeds through the war years, a history of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds music halls and theatres (past and present). All these are "unofficial" websites where someone with the interest has taken the trouble to do the research. It would be good to share these on this site in one place.

Yes agreed about the useful links/research, or websites of local interest would be good added to their own section on S.L. As you say many people must be looking up the same websites. It just takes someone to set it up, and just keep it in a little order, not much work really at all. I'm all for it     

OK - I've sent an email to Dsco and Munki to ask if it can be added as a new section in the "Main discussion areas" part.I've suggested the name "Secret Leeds Library - shhhh!!"

I was pleased to find the row of houses where I live in Horsforth described as a positive feature in my local conservation area.Somewhere else that's good for local research is the London Gazette (http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/). I did a search on Horsforth just to see what was there and it came back with bankruptcy notices as far back as 1729, long before the census started.

Thanks for this mhoulden - I've just done a search on Headingley and the results are really interesting!Phill - thanks for the thumbs-up (yes, it is animated!) and let's see what happens! Hopefully we can build up a really good set of resources which everyone can add to and benefit from.

TasaDepending upon the address you used, it may not get there - if you send your message to me, I'll pass it on (addy in profile), though, is it really a forum to add to, or more just a reference for research perhaps which fits nicely with the intended purpose of 'General Chat'?
