SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

In the middle of the square of houses above is/was a tennis court. These houses are surrounded by Brudenell Road (bottom), Mayville Road (on the left), Walmsley Road (top) and Hessle Avenue (on the right). My auntie used to live on Hessle Ave in the 60's and if I remember correctly the tennis court was only accessible from the rear of all the houses, no other access. So basically the court was only for the use of tenants of the surrounding homes. It looks overgrown and not in use anymore and I was wondering if this is unique to Leeds or are there other courts scattered about the place? And why was this one here?

Good bit of work Chris.The houses and tennis court appeared sometime between 1921 and 1933. At one time the tennis court was accessible from the street, so it looked like it was a community thing, and not just for the houses surrounding it. Four paths lead to it on each corner of the square. You can just see where they ran from the hedges, fences, and shapes of the sheds on Google street view. The square of houses above also had similar paths from the four corners, but they only lead to a ginnel that ran at the back of the houses.

Well well you learn something every day. I walked down and around these streets every day for 5 years while at school at Brudenell.Even had a school mate live on Hessle Ave and I never knew about the tennis court.Good one Chris
