seeking info about explosion at kirkstall forge on or around7/11/42 my father arthur henry lee was killed also 4 other people ?? several were injured any info appreciated .i lived at 2 redshaw road armley most of my life tony

thanks but the incident relating to my dad was definitely in november have a small cutting from ye news (may not be kirkstall forge) definitely kirkstall road cheers tony

According to this:http://www.projectinspire.kk5.org/#/leeds/45389790015 people were killed at Kirkstall during air raid in August 1942. Probably the same incident mentioned above though.

Welcome to the forum Tony. Could you scan a copy of the newspaper cutting for us? I know it's not an easy forum to post pictures on, but I'm sure if you asked nicely, that one of the many helpfull members here would post it up for you.

Tony Try contacting The West Yorkshire Archive Service http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/They appear to have archive records from Kirkstall Forge a good starting point might be this collection:http://catalogue.wyjs.org.uk/Record.asp ... 96&pos=52I am sure for such a significant event as a forge explosion there would be acccounts retained within the company records. It may be worthwhile enquiring with WYAS about the location of the coroners reports for the accident or if there was a public enquiry?G

Hi Tony,I don't know if this is the same newspaper cutting you have, but I found this reference in the online search of Leeds Libraries Athena Search:Explosions - Article - YEP03/05/86Year of Publication : 1986Note on the 2 explosions in W.W.2 at an un-named factory making magnesium incendiary devices in Kirkstall Road near Thwaite Mills. Explosion was on 6 Nov. 1942. Weekend Post. p.11Full Detail of Record : 2002325_9357851If this is a different cutting to the one you have, you can see the full article, which should give more information, on microfiche in the Reference Library on the top floor of the Central Library in Leeds. The microfiche rolls are filed in order of publication so you should be able to find that copy of the YEP quite easily (but if you haven't used the microfiche readers before, be warned that they are quite fiddly to use but there will be a member of staff on hand to help!!).The Central Library will also have a copy of the original article, which is probably the one you have, dated 7/11/42.What I can't find, despite an extensive search of a detailed 1930s map, is any reference to a Thwaite Mills near Kirkstall Road. It won't be Kirkstall Forge, as the main road is called Abbey Road at that location. Kirkstall Road runs between Wellington Street and Abbey Road and there are numerous factories and mills on that stretch of road on the map I'm looking at, but not a Thwaite Mills. If I find anything more, I'll add another post to this thread. Good luck with your search and I hope you find the answer.

THANKS TASA ,THE CUTTING I HAVE LIST THE DEAD & INJURED AND DOES MENTION IT IS THE SECOND EXPLOSION IN 12 MTHS .THE HEAD LINES ARE "DEATH TOLL MOUNTS TO FIVE IN LEEDS WORKS EXPLOSION " A VISIT TO LEEDS CENTRAL LIBRARY IS ON THE CARDS GRATEFUL FOR EVERY ONES HELP .TONY
