Does anyone remember Sunday school outings in the mid 50's?I recall going on a couple of outings with the Sunday school from the Methodist Chapel on Harehills Lane. One in particular must have taken some organising because there were a number of LCT buses on special hire to take Sunday school groups from all over Leeds to a field in open countryside on the outskirts. There must have been a few hundred people present all picnicing on a hillside overlooking a stream. On the flat grassy area alongside the stream there was a running track marked out with ropes for egg and spoon, 3 legged and sack races. The only time I have ever seen or taken part in these events. It was about this time of year, possibly May Day. It sticks in my mind because in mid-afternnoon it was rained off by a violent thunderstorm.

I think I must have been 9 or 10 so it will have been 55 or 56. I went with a group from the Hope Hall Sunday School, just off Scott Hall Road, not a Methodist Sunday School so it may have been a different outing but certainly the location and activities sound the same.

Hi loiner. Thanks for confirming my memory of the outing . I was 7 or 8 at the time. Thinking about it I'm not certain the chapel was methodist so we may well be recalling the same outing. My guess would place it at 1955 because my grandad was there and he was too ill the following year. It was a very enjoyable day out made even more memorable by the electric storm.
