The Oates monument just off Stonegate Road ,near the Revolution Well at Meanwood commemorates an earlier member of his family.

Capt Oates archive and a collection of artefacts are on display in the regimental museum at Chester Castle. If you ever find yourself in that part of the world its worth a visit.
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!
