Does anyone remember the Murder shop?My family used to live in Temple View Terrace, Leeds 9, in the area behind what is now the Irish Centre in York Road.On the south side of York Road, from the Everleighs, there are clusters of small shops fronting the main road, up to and beyond the playground of the Victoria School.Back in the 1940s and probably later, one of these shops used to have a sign outside which boasted, “We don`t just cut prices, we MURDER them.”Inevitably, my parents always referred to this shop as the Murder shop, which added a slightly shuddering air of mystery for us kids.I have no clear memory of what they sold, just a feeling there were small and useful household items. I also think they sold kids`s stuff because I`m sure we benefited from the Christmas club they ran. With not much cash coming into the house, we always did rather well and enjoyed huge bolster cases full of toys and books etc, not just pillow cases.I`ve often wondered if "Murder shop" was a general name in the neighbourhood, or just confined to my family.Glax

On similar lines, that shop on Merrion Street renamed itself 'That Shop on Merrion Street' because everyone called it that. Mind, they should have referred to '...Miriam Street' since that's what your auntie always thought it was.

uncle mick: thanks for the Leodis reference, which was new to me. Clearly other people too called this store the Murder shop. I didn`t know the owners had other shops in the town, so they were obviously more well known than I thought.yorkiesknob: looks as if your conclusion of a common banner with the same logo is spot on, because you mention a Murder shop in Kirkstall Road and Leodis says the Dawsons had a store there.Following the Leodis revelation of the owners` name, I slightly wish I`d had the courage of my childhood memory since “Dawson” has always been at the back of my mind.glax

Amongst other things he used to re-fill bic type ball pens, or any type at all FTM.He used to push out the ball with a wire from the "blunt end" and suck up fresh ink from a tiny inkwell on the counter. A bit of a desperate way to earn a living. It never worked.
