Here's something interesting i've just come across. I thought it would be good to share it on here with you guys. It's the first time i've ever heard of it.This sketch dates from 1694 and is taken from the Leeds Corporation Court Books. It shows the ducking stool which was once in use at Lady Beck, Mabgate. The unfortunate woman here is the wife of Philip Saule and several complaints had been made about her, 'she is a person of lewd behaviour, a common scold and daily maketh strife and discord amongst her neighbours, it is therefore ordered that the said Anne Saule be ducked' Two other women suffered the same punishment that day, Jane Milner and Elizabeth Wooler, both dwelling in Mill Hill...........................................................Picture and text from that excellent Leodis website herehttp://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIde ... Ducking stools and Scolds were regular forms of punishment in days gone past, sometimes I think the old punisments should return for the yobs of today.
