This is part of a report I've just seen on the BBC Ceefax today."A road in Leeds has been closed after utility workers uncovered a large hole underneath its surface. The cavity was found in the northbound carriageway of the A660 Otley Road in Headingley, between the junctions with St. Michael's Road and North Lane".I wonder how big the hole is? Is it deep enough for there to be some unknown (or forgotten) structure below?

Is it a tunnel from Kirkstall Abbey to Weetwood Hall..? Early reports on Radio Leeds seemed to be hinting that the actual issue was "where gas main works have been carried out" - now it's not clear if it's current gas main works that have uncovered a subterranean chamber, or if the hole is as a result of earlier gas main works that haven't been carried out properly. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Certainly there have been problems on the A660 closer to the city centre where the cellars of the rows of terraced houses that were cleared weren't properly filled in and the road has collapsed into them. There was an incident of this in the last year or two near the Woodhouse Lane multi-storey car park if I remember correctly.

With you all the way raveydavey - and I'll help with shovelling the earth on top !! Perhaps we might be lucky enough to find enough space to put the "Purple slugs" in as well, making sure naturally that the pilots, cabin crews and passengers have been safely offloaded first.

I have not seen any images of the 'hole' so I don't know how deep it is. It would be interesting if there is an air raid sheleter involved, as such a thing has been unexpectedly found at times. For example (if I recall correctly) when development work started for the Inner Ring Road an air raid shelter was found in the area between North Lane and Regent Street (I think there was a Grandways store thereabouts).
