My Grandpa (96 yrs old) also remembers the King and Queen coming to open the Civic hall and having some dust in her eye. He worked on Rockingham St at the time (now under the Merrion Centre) and went down to watch. We also have a blurred photo of the Royal Carriage driving past the crowd, where you can just about make out the Royal occupants. It makes it somewhat more real when you have stuff like this - bit of social history rather than the history of the great leaders that we always hear about.

My mam was from Hemsworth, but at 14 (1929/30)went into service in a house in Headingley, and lived in Leeds for about 7/8 years. I remember her saying she remembers the Zeppelin coming over Leeds, and was convinced it was doing a recce for the war. Does anyone have any information on this?

Well as it happens it turns out that is exactly what it did,it went up the Aire Valley photographing all and sundrie. Our government let it do a low fly over the country as a short cut to Ireland and then onto the states,it was so low that people up in Rawdon were looking at down on it in the valley. There was an article in the YEP a while ago, might be worth searching their site.
