I'm putting all my info on the family into a family history book and these are the streets and factories in Leeds that I've not got a lot of info on where my parents and grandparents lived or worked and in the case of Hyde Terrace Hospital where I made my first appearance.18 Houghley Mount 40 Town Street Chapel Allerton. 9 Scott Street7 Albert Street Stanningley Hyde Terrace HospitalSecond Avenue Armley 25 Danube Grove New Wortley Mill Green School Holbeck Marshall’s woodworks Tower Fisheries fish and chips shop, Thornes Toffee factory on Lady Lane LeedsKenning Commercial Company on the Coal Road, Seacroft (The old Shell Mex depot next to Elida Gibbs)Hagenbachs bakery Church Lane PudseyCables & Plastics Manston Lane Mum and Dad talked about a Shell Mex canteen this is when they still lived around Armley so it's not the one in Seacroft where Dad went to work in 1960, any ideas where it could be?Jools

Hi,Second Avenue Armley was off Hall Lane and above Green Lane not far from the Armley jail. There were a few Avenues starting at 1 and I am uncertain to how many but I was sure it was about 12 as I cant remember hearing about anymore than that.I at one point lived further along Hall Lane from the Avenues in FitzArthur Street and later found out that my Great Auntie Laura had also lived in that house too, what a coincidence.

Hi Jools,Have you tried searching Leodis for pictures of these places? It's surprising how often even an obscure street is pictured on this site.I don't remember a Hagenbach's on Church Lane, but coincidentally, I posted this picture of another Pudsey Hagenbach's on another thread just the other day. It was the building to the right of the pub.

There were eighteen "avenues" (nineteen if you count Upper Third as separate) as can be seen from this 1906 map.Green Lane School is in the middle, the gaol to the top, and Copley Hill is at the bottom. My dad was born in one of the avenues, and both sets of his grandparents are buried in New Wortley Cemetery.Click on the map to enlarge it.Some of the avenues appear on Leodis, but unfortunately not Second.

Here's some pics I've found, Jools. There's nothing for Houghley Mount, but this Leodis pic shows no. 40 (second from left, I think) Town Street, Chapel Allerton. View taken in 1963 from the front of The Nag's Head.

Junction of Eastgate and Vicar Lane. H. Thorne's & Co Ltd, cocoa manufacturers, in 1945. Lady Lane is behind the factory. Before the widening of Nelson Street in the 30s, which became Eastgate, this was the site of the Black Swan Inn. The architecture of the corner building now continues down to Quarry Hill. I believe the construction was temporarily halted by the war. That's yer lot, Jools.
