We've had a couple of kids come round Carol Singing. They sang We wish you a Merry Xmas and that was it.I said don't you know any Carols? They said no."We don't go to school"Another lad actually came on the Sat after Bonfire nightI told him he was much too early,he said he wanted some money to buy cigs with,I told him to Sling his hook.Any one else any tales to tell?Is it me or does any one else feel that it's a type of Begging?

I had one lad knock on the door tonight - he sang some of 'Jingle Bells' and didn't get all the words right.

As a kid in Bramley we used to give value for money. 2 or 3 carols and 2 or 3 verses from each singing for about 5 min outside each house. People were often very generous i can remember being given as much as half a crown when that really was a lot of money. As for today's kids they probably never get to sing carols properly in school or sunday school. "Sling your hook"- wonderful phrase I haven't heard used for years. I wonder how a naval expression came to be widely used in West Yorks?
