Lots of shops had little signs years ago,licenced to sell cigarettes and tobacco was one.Non post office shops licenced to sell postage stamps.Dog licence - no longer needed.Radio licence,and then a seperate one for in the car.Licenced to sell Game,I thinkthat one still applies.The serious ones like firearms and petroleum still apply, have I missed licences for long ago for stuff we take for granted now ?

I used to love the sign over pub doors - the landlord/landlady's name was always followed by the magnificent wording :- "Licensed in pursuance of an Act of Parliament for the sale of beer, wines and spirits for consumption both on and off the premises."Real "Rumpole of The Bailey" stuff, and I've always loved legal jargon from a humorous point of view.

You need an operator's licence to run transport. And believe me it's not easy to get one. The traffic commisioner's officers at Hillcrest House became a familiar haunt of mine in the nineties when I was trying to obtain one. Extremely difficult. It may be easier now - on line. I'm not sure.

It's like the knife amnesty things, many peopel scoff at it but the purpose is to make it easier to convict those who carry a knife as they were givent he opportunity to give it up.I guess those who nick scrap can get done on two counts if caught nad it may give the police rights to stops and check for a license and it might prove more of a deterant.

The disposal and processing of electrical goods under WEEE regulations, which is an absolute minefield. The city will accept junk computers, fridges, washing machines and microwaves and the like at the recycling centres, but only in small quantities. I got around to binning half a dozen junk PCs that I had collected over the years last year and only just fell short of having to register as a business to do it.

The thing people want to stop paying NOW is the TV licence, tell why you need to pay for a TV licence when you don't watch BBC.How do they get away with it paying for something you don't watch?Next will be the computer licence.I am not paying the TV licence any more from Feb 2010 my new years resolution stop paying for what i don't use.

You can try it but don't have a leg to stand on. The licencse is to possess a TV set. Whether you even turn it on is irrelvent.
