Going back a year or two further than Kenneth I can remember two more specialist photographic shops in Leeds : Pearson & Denham on Bond Street and George? Child at the corner of Albion Street and Albion Place. Both were in existence inthe early 60s at least. I used them both.

And I would like to bet there are more if we can only trawl. What make of camera equipment were you using in those days?

Today there is a good photographic dealership in the Merrion Centre called Dale Photographic. They still sell Ilford chemicals and paper. I bought a Gossen Spot-meter and a Manphrotto tripod from them a couple of weeks ago. They mainly specialise in medium format but they are official Nikon and Hasselblad agents and are worth a visit. They also had a fairly mint condition Leica IIIf with a 50mm 2.8 Summitar in which would be a nice combination if anyone is looking to produce B&W images in a vintage mould. I haven't tried it so I don't know what the lens flare is like. Summitar's were well known for lens flare They also had a shop in lower Brigate and more recently a workshop on an upper floor at the Lower Brigate/Duncan Street junction. Mmmmmm, Hasselblad (no not some strange fetish cnosni before you say anything!) couldn't run to that - but still have my old Pentax. Somehow the thought of being restricted to 36 shots at a time seems rather weak now with all this digital technomonologology Yes Dale Photographic were in Lower Briggate and Allan who appears to be the owner used to work at Leeds Camera Centre- I think. They were in the a couple of sites in the Merrion Centre and then didn't they move somewhere just off North Street?

Incredible to think that they have all gone apart from Dale Photographic and Jessops who I gather might be on thier way which is a shame because I have always had good service from them for chemicals and paper.

It's amasing how the mind conveniently forgets things. Nobody so far has mentioned Boot's. I am as guilty as anyone as I bought my first 2 cameras from them. A Brownie 127 which I used in my trainspotting days and then a Yashica Minister III 35mm rangefinder camera when I started climbing. My parents bought me a Pentax S1a with a clip on lightmeter with a 50mm 1.8 Takumar lens for my eighteenth birthday. Since then I have had various Nikon SLR's, Nikon F, FAs, FM, F3HP, FM2a until the year before last I went back to a rangefinder camera system which I use exclusively for B&W
