Do you know what you don't see anymore? Free Range dogs. When I was a kid in the 70's , everyone just opened the door and let Rover (whoever heard of a dog called Rover??) wander where he liked. I was telling my girlfriend tonight that I'd often be out playing with my mates around Meanwood and I'd see our Monty (fat poodle/mongrel) out with his own mates. We'd acknowledge each other with a nod and maybe a pat (me to him, he couldnt reach my head), then go on our way. No drama, we were close but not that close. You choose your mates, not your family and all that. She found this hilarious, being a few years younger than me.I explained that I knew all Monty's mates -Fred, Laddie, Rajah, and Candy (though she was a girl dog and I got the impression that the boy dogs really just tolerated her, as you do). If we met up on the street it was like a meeting of brothers a few years apart (though he was probably well into his 50's in dog years).Nowadays, if you see a dog out on his own, he's most likely either a starving, feral specimen more suited to the streets of Delhi, or a chain dragging escapee guard dog sniffing out lunch at the gates of a kindergarten. We champion the cause of battery hens, veal calves and treadmill pigs, but no one remembers our canine brothers and the freedom they had before the 80's. Unleash the dogs I say. Let them wander the earth freely again as God intended. Also scrap the dog mess bags that hang from all the trees in every park. Every 70's kid knows that the luckiest omen in life is a thick stripe of white poodle poo on your best t-shirt!

Lol what a cracking little piece you should be a writer mate lol.I know what you mean though,my auntie had a dog like yours he was a black and white collie(bobby)and he got everywhere (litrally)he was responsible for a influx of black and white border collie crosses on the gipton lolI remember one day we were all playing up at roundhay park (in them tunnels made famous by phill)and along pops bobby, gave me a little bark then a lick and off he went with his pack of mates. There's a dog now doing the rounds on the gipton(funnily enough it too is a border collie but a lovely gold coloured one)and the story that goes with it is enough to break your heart-the story is this--The bloke who used to own the dog used to be an old alky who died last year but the dog still goes around his old haunts looking for himyou see it stood at the bus stop on coldcotes circus waiting for him,or you will often find him next to the bench in the park looking around eagerly for his owner sad eh?Its only recently that he has started trusting the odd person on the estate so he at least he is getting fed!The Dog warden has tried to capture it umpteen times and he's now given up lol
There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

Very funny and witty thread.Great observation too! But before you campaign for the cause of free roaming dogs.Put a Postmans shirt on and red bag and walk the streets mate!I did...for 10 years. You'll soon change your tune very quick.I can vouch for that lol *******************Seriously there are some very dangerous and aggresive dogs out there. The owners (or lack of brain owners) are mostly to blame.I've seen some horrendeous injuries.Someone covered my walk/round while i was on leave. She had her muscle torn in bits from her arm.We have these Chavvy scum-wanna be gangsta bad boy creatures walking about with dangerous dogs as some kind of walking weapon, status symbol these days.
My flickr pictures are herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/Because lunacy was the influence for an album. It goes without saying that an album about lunacy will breed a lunatics obsessions with an album - The Dark side of the moon!
