After seeing the thread on Secret Leeds about the big public air raid shelters in Leeds. I can't help but think the Leeds shelters were very boring compared to some places. Basically we had a big hole dug in the recreation grounds. Square brickwork went up with a concrete top added. Then a bit of soil was bulldozed back on top were the grass once again grows. On the other hand Stockport has some amazing air raid shelters. They were deep level shelters able to accomodate 7,000 people. They were cut into the red Sandstone on which the town is built on.There a real rabbits warren and labyrinth of complex tunnel systems under the town. The red sandstone makes them look like a Jawa scene from Star wars.If the air raid shelters aren't good enough, a disused railway tunnel runs underneath one of them.No wonder the church above started to subside into it Anyway i spent the weekend having a look at all three deep level shelters, there is also the railway tunnel with some amazing strenghtining supports once inside.A rather nice Pink Floyd track is also added for good measure herehttp://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=265602590&blogId=475929653Enjoy

Subterranian Stockport Blues!Brilliant work phill(again lol)excellent touch with the floyd also mate! The wall is one of my faves as it goes. Its just a shame its been hijacked by all the "we dont need no education"divvies lol what i couldnt do with was when david gilmour started associating the wall with the 'Berlin' wall??Roger waters writes a classic album about building invisible walls/barriers to protect yourself through life and then in one fell swoop gilmour ruins it by linking it to a wall of bricks and mortar grrrrrrsorry pink Floyd rant now over lol, excellent job,i just wish that something similar would turn up in Leeds for you to explore?

Yet another brilliant stash of photo's! Funnily enough I always wondered what the "tunnel entrances" were at the side of the motorway, everytime I pass I think of such a system underground. Now I know Cheers
