Milgarth police station area.

Hi, i was reading the haunted leeds book last night and read a section about millgarth police station. This article said it was built in the centre of leeds most violent slum and had army barracks and a morgue on site for when it got out of control. just wondering if anybody has any info on this area as iv never heard of it before.thanks anyway

It was just behind the present Milgarth Police Station. Where the car park is now, near the public entrance to the station you can still see the remains of parts of the buildings. This is a good pic of the police station in context with the Yorkshire Hussar, where Hoagys is now at the bottom of Eastgate. You can go wander down Union Street and see the enamel brick interior walls. The police station looked after Quarry Hill, which without being too derogatory was not one of the nest areas in the city.

Here's a better pic, courtesy of LEODIS. 1st May 1908. Built in 1878 for a total of £5150 as a divisonal headquarters, it was originally much larger containing barracks and mortuary. In 1885 the barracks were condemned by the Medical Officer of Health and the mortuary was transferred to Old Mill Lane, Hunslet in 1903. A new modern police station stands on the site. View is looking from Union Street.

If you look closely at LS1s aerial pic you can see the base of the walls, around the car park,of the police station.I remember when the old station was in use during the construction of the current,now empty,Millgarth.

If I'm being pedantic about the Leodis desription Chrism has posted it states that a new station stands on the site which is not strictly true. As cnosni has stated you can see the outline of the old station on the aerial view I posted, which was what I was trying to highlight when I posted it this morning but was too half asleep!

Although I'm too young to actually remember the old building, I can certainly remember parts of it still standing for years, seemingly being demolished piecemeal with the land being used for parking.I'm fairly sure parts of the old walls are still there surrounding the car park.What was on the space behind the police station, heading up towards Vicar Lane? I can only remember that as parking, albeit with the footings / floorplan of whatever was there clearly visible (it was years before it was tarmaced over properly) apart from a row of shops (now gone) facing towards the side of the market.

I worked in this area in 1969 to 1971 in The Weights and Measures building. I remember that Millgarth was close, but it is very vague and I can not remember when it was demolished.I think the weights and measures building was still there until recently????

I found this picture on my computer and i think it is 1972. The Weights and Measures building is at the end of the row of cars on the left. But has Millgarth gone??Inside the Weights and measures building were offices, scales and weights. Every pub, club and garage was checked in those days.I will try and post another picture from Leodis.

I have made a b***** of that. But I am sure you can see the old picture of the Weights and measures from Leodis and the one from 1972 - it is at the end of the row of cars on the left.I would be very interested to know if the old W and M building is still standing and when Millgarth was demolished.I remember when I started working there that there was a rabbit skin man who had a small wharehouse in the adjacent row up from the W and M building - Lord did it stink in summer LOL
