The mitre public house was on commertial street and not on Albion street, it was a couple of doors up from the where the ALLIANCE AND LEICESTER building society is now.You went down the steps through the doors along bar on the right and cubicles on the left no women aloud only the two old ladies behind the bar and the salvation lasses selling the war cry,that was our second stop coming home on leave from the army,first stop SCARBORO TAPS,sometimes we never got home.

I remember it well Johnnyboy from the outside. I seem to remember that as you looked in from Commercial Street there was a larghe mirror on the staircase wall and on it was a bit of a scruffy black and white notice saying "Gentlemen only."From your description it sounds a bit like "Albert Cowling's Wine Lodge" on Boar Lane - City Square end. That was kind of circular inside with a central bar and alcoves or cubicles - there was an organist playing, and so much ale swilling about everywhere that a notice proclaiming "qualified swimmers only" would not have been out of place !! Happy days !!

Yes you're right - my mistake on page 4 of the 'Lost pubs' thread!I've added a correction. Were 'Women Aloud' a 1940's version of 'Girls Aloud'???
