These were usually mounted on were regarded as permanent structures (one on Allerton High School - soon to be gone!) and the signaling lines were monitored by Post Office Telecoms.Do these still exist?

The info regarding the alarms been tested and heard miles away came from a group of guys who worked at Hunslet.. I let them use some of my archive pics.. They mailed me a load of info about the place to put on the blog. I think it' safe to say the alarm James heard at 11 on a Friday will be the same Friday morning 11 o'clock Hunslet alarm?? It isn't too far away.

I only ever saw one "early warning" device. It was in the Coal Board's workshops in Sheffield. It looked like a telephone and used to bleep very so often, written on it was the advice that if the bleep went to a single note that was the four minute warning - pretty scary!

I assume that meant that the Russians would see the signs and turn around and go home....

Does anyone remember the sirens for the whole city sounding at the time of the Suez crisis in 1956, a large chunk of the populace thought the end was nigh. The Evening post went potty as there was no warning that it was just a test.
