My surname is originally Scottish (I was told by a Scot in Sutherland that I have Celtic characteristics - long back, short legs!)Having built a family tree, the furthest I've got back is the 18th century when they were all living in Shelf, near Halifax. They had a mass exodus to Hunslet in the mid 1800s.Incidentally, the coat-of-arms for my name on the site is not 100% correct.

My surname is from my paternal grandfathers from Ireland. However, my maternal Grandmother was from a very (once) powerfull family in North yorkshire! Lots of history related to it.    edit to add, that site knew nothing of my maternal hisotry, just summised a lot and claimed somewhere in Yorkshire. Well that narrows it down a bit

I looked at both my mother and fathers side to do this, what a difference. They are as follows:Mothers side - First found in Yorkshire where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor.Fathers side - First found in Derbyshire where they were seated from ancient times, some say before the Norman Conquest in 1066.Might have to investigate this a little further, he he.
