Not sure, but part of it still stands as a, I think, a lecky sub station. I remember it as a sort of warehouse, only pulled down about 10 years or so ago.

I'll see if he can clear this up, but the speculation is fun. He did tell me the cell walls were white-tiled though. But I never heard anything about an annexe.

I was just referring to the cells building as an annexe, because it's a newer part added on. Not a seperate annexe to the cells, Kes.That sounds as clear as mud!

That makes senseThere's a book called 'The Leeds City Police' which might help on all this. They probably have a copy in Central Library

"Hi Chrism things must have changed in there, in my late teens it was allways said if you got taken to Millgarth after having a few to many you got a punch or two before you got out"a little off topic, but there isnt a police brutality in leeds thread yet, but the above post reminded me of this Milgart incident so i just thought id share this with you anyway, a freind of mine was thrown out of le Phono one night for been a drunken a##hole as he was thrown out he gave the bouncers some lip, but there was a police van parked at the bottom of the steps of the merrion centre and there were some policeman hanging about and so on hearing this this they arrested him, despite our pleas they put him in the van and drove off, any way we didnt give him another though to be honest and we had a great night and i stayed at my mates house which he shared with the guy that was arrested, sometime the following morning he came home, he was covered in bruises he had a black eye and a bust lip and his body was covered in bruises he had the S@@t kicked out of him, now my mate was lippy especially when drunk, but to be worked over by half a dozen milgarth copers is a bit much, he said they started in the van, then when they got him to milgarth they said they picked him up in that state, then after abit in the cells they came back and had another go, baring in mind this wasnt the bad old days this was about 2001, my mate was 19 about five foot five and pretty skinny and didnt have a scratch on him when they arrested him, anyway he made an official complaint about it and got the lawyers involved though it never came to anything as he couldnt prove it, we were all pretty drunk and so unrelaiable witnesses, but just after her made the complaint his car was torched in his driveway, no eveidence it was the milgarth coppers, but we always thought it was, anyway conspiracy corner over for now...PS did you ever here the story that ray winstone was once arrested and brought to leeds from london as a suspect in a shooting of a police officer as he bore a startling resmblance to the guy who really did it, and was thrown in bridewell, apparently it was the most terrorfing night of his life as the reputation of Leeds bobbys had reached london and given the crime he was susupected of commiting he thought he was in deep deep poo!

Crikey! Are you allowed to post such allegations on here?Anyhoo, back to Union Street Baths.Me and my mate used to go to Union Street Baths on Wednesday afternoons, late sixties - our school had a half day that day. We were always questioned by the staff who thought we were nicking off [is that the right term? We used to call it something different from what they call it today - not wagging or bunking off. Another thread maybe] but we weren't.Until I read this thread I would have thought that the baths were next door to the old police station but that's obviously not the case. What I do stand firm on, though, is that the entrance to the baths was parallel - ie we got off the bus on Eastgate, walked along Harewood Street, turned left, walked down Union Street and turned right at the front of the baths, turning left to enter them. In other words, if the baths hadn't been there, then as you went in you would have been facing Quarry Hill flats.

Hi Geordie-exile,Going by the maps/photos, what you say is correct. However, the baths and the cop-shop were next door to each other, in that the buildings were next to each other, but their fronts faced in opposite directions - the baths west, and the cop-shop east.

When you say next door to each other do you mean next door on Union Street?
