From memory I think it did at one time, seem to remember a surface water outfall there but main flow emerges near Victoria Bridge. Will check next week some time, bit busy.

Cheers Cardiarms. The whole water front in central Leeds is fascinating. Each time I look at old maps I see something I don't recall seeing before but I often also get more confused about what I thought I did know!

Is not.Why not take a trip round Holbeck and follow the open culverted Hol Beck to it's discharge to the Aire.Pick it up on Water lane and follow to the Aire.... Let's see it in all it's glory courtesy of your wonderful camera...

Thanks for that information The Parksider. The pillar supported site will therefore just be where the old wharf was. I wonder how old the pillars are, as if original then they are very old so I hope secure from collapse.

I'm unsure if this is where Holbeck Beck runs into the River Aire as there seems to be no obvious water running into the river, but I wonder if it may be hidden by the shrubs? I would be grateful if someone could please let me know if this site is, or is not, where the culverted Holbeck Beck runs into the river. The seemingly falling to bits 'shed' looks an eyesore! I wonder if the owner of the red car knows what "lies beneath"? Not sure I'd park that close to the edge, with nothing to prevent a slight miscalculation in stopping distances becoming a swimming lesson....

Leodian, you can see where Holbeck goes underground for the last time before hitting the river here:http://goo.gl/maps/RvfwpThe railings being the edge of it and the bush marking it's disappearance. It can then be seen entering the river from the bridge on Neville Street though sadly it is not too visible on Google Street View so you can just see the top of the outlet to the left of the large stone with the lamps on it here:http://goo.gl/maps/7Hb6W

Hi raveydaveyI had thought that about the red car. I also hope the driver of the dark car seen in one of the photos is very good at 3 point turns!

Cheers BarFly. I will have walked by those sites but never noticed! I shall have a good look at some stage.

I have just read through this thread properly again (I last read it a couple of years ago) and I realised that there may be another, older, outflow of Holbeck still to be found -- so you could be onto something Leodian.

I was wondering if any of 'the locals' could tell me where Barleycorn Street was in the Wortley, Holbeck area. I am working off an old Ordnance survey map of the Holbeck and New Wortley area of 1888. I have found Whitehall Road, Spence Lane, Wortley Lane. I know it is in that area somewhere, however on this map it is not noted. I am trying to match it up with the New Wortley Steam Mill, which in turn was renamed the New Wortley Steam Mill, Corn Mill. This mill was once operated by the Dawson family and in turn this family became associated with the brewery in Kirkstall - The brewery, originally owned by John Dawson until his eldest son took it over with his brothers. It then became, Benjamin Dawson & Co. Brewers. The co being his brothers John and Edwin. Would anyone be able to pinpoint it a little more closer for me.CheersJudith GardinerWellington, New Zealand
