So I think those white tiles must have been from the cell walls.I think - to answer another question - it was originally a red brick building, but it became black over time. So the newer "annexe" was a new cell-block, Kes. Chrism, on page 1 of this thread, states that until 1885, there was a barrack-block and a mortuary attached. Presumably, they're under where the baths used to be?PS Cheers, Reg!

There were about 12 cells I think, 6 cells on each side of a corridor. To get to the cells you went through the main double doors and then took a left turn. So I wonder whether that annexe on the maps would be the cells. Oops! "Cross-threaded!"I guess so, Kes.PS How do you know, or shouldn't I ask?!

So it down to those pesky maps again is it. I forgot to look at them to be fair but it's strange just how inconsistent they are! Having said that the two maps perhaps highlight a lot of change that went on on witht he building over the years. Certainly the footprint that is left today is more consistent with the 1920's map

Should have made it clearer. Yellow is the old milgarth, red is the addition made sometime between 1908 and 1921 and the blue is the weights and measures that is still there.Milgarth Place must have been removed to make way for an enlargement of the Police Station
