I forgot the stock question we always asked the fishman whenever he came in the pub, "have you got crabs legs or is it the way your trousers hang?" He must have been fed up to the back teeth hearing that one, still if you were buying something he didn't seem to mind.

I read in the paper this week that Waitrose are launching their new "Forgotten Cuts" range of meat to help cash strapped families make cheap and tasty meals, and steer them away from ready meals, how very benevolent of them! I can't see there being a stampede to clear their shelves of pigs trotters, lambs tails and bonemarrow, described as a fatty paste like substance which comes in a 450g pack for only £4.99. and can be used to enrich soups and stews............or as a garnish? I'm sure a lump of that would enhance any meal!

Especially when you consider what the £4.99 Waitrose are asking for bone marrow will buy at Aldi or Lidl?

I used to have a friend called 'Fishman John' cos he sold fresh fish and prawns etc round pubs in LS6 etc. He died about 15 years ago of a heroin overdose.

I think Waitrose have realised it's "on trend" for their middle class customers(half of which are skint but reckon on not to be) to shop at Aldi and Lidl so to try and claw back some business someone in the marketing dept. has had an idea, let's parcel all the stuff we normally chuck out at sell it to the "poor people" I won't be garnishing my frozen lasagne with bone marrow from Waitrose!

I don't go in Aldi much but I assume it's very similar to Lidl. I think Lidl is great. Some of their stuff - their chocolate say - is very high quality and not expensive. We go fairly regularly. If there was one in Morley we'd go more. I reckon all the cheap supermarkets are frightened to come to Morley because of Asda, Sainsbury and Morrisons.

At a party last night I was given a piece of bought parkin.I complained that as it had been made with Golden Syrup and not black treacle, it wasn't "proper parkin".I was told it was the Yorkshire way, but I am sure that you get treacle parkin on this side of the Pennines as well!

My wife makes it once a year for my birthday (because it's so fattening) she puts both golden syrup and black treacle in hers. I've had some tonight after my tea - delish!
