Yeah, I remember the 'Pets Arcade' pie shop, they did a deal where if you took in your old dead pet you got a free pie... I wonder what was in the pies? Of course I am joking. But seriously the nicest pork pies I've ever had, as I'm not a great fan of them in the first place, are from Weegmans in Otley. Infact anything from Weegmans is delicious and of the highest quality as the queues of people at lunchtime will testify to. Plus its not particularly expensive neither. Is it worth travelling to Otley just to get a growler though? Well it depends how badly you want one I reckon. For a true taste of Yorkshire day what we used to do was get the bus to Otley, have a big English breakfast in the riverside cafe, then drink a few pints of ale in a few of Otleys finest pubs, walk up to the Chevin and drink some more in the Royalty, return to Otley and scoff some of the aforementioned pies before getting the bus to Bradford and going for a chicken biriyani, peshwari naan and lassi's in the Kashmir Cafe on Morley Street followed by more ale in some Bradford pubs, usually The Beehive. Champion!

I still recall the gorgeous hot pork pies with mushy peas and vinegar that used to be sold at a small stall in Kirkgate Market (close to the old pets arcade). The pie stall was run by a family called Popes if i remember rightly. After the pie stall closed they ran an icecream van on the outside market site.

Crikey, 2 years since the last post on this thread. The pie shop in the market made nice pies but they didn't reign for long.Over the past year or so we have bought pies from Wilsons and to be honestboth my wife andI think the are not a patch on what they used to be

I've tried most/all local ones. To my jaded palate the most over-rated was Wilsons of ? Cross Gates, Austhorpe Rd.It looked good but had the usual Leeds pink meat, bit of jelly. The best pie I've tasted in a long time was one brought by a mate for a walking trip in the Dales. It was from Walter Smiths of Wolverhampton

The shop still seems busy enough, even after the refit, so perhaps it's just us two, eh?That said, the last one I had from the legendary Weegmans in Otley wasn't anywhere near their usual high standard either.Andrew Jones pork pies, made in Huddersfield but available across the county, are the best at the minute in my opinion.
