Foster & Co. (Stearines) Ltd.In the early sixties, I worked for a firm of chartered accountants and used to go there to do the audit. The foul smell was from the grease which was extracted from wool. Some of the grease was later used in the manufacture of cosmetics, which I thought was quite funny - if only the ladies knew!Ian.     Hi Ian. We used to do a lot of business with Fosters. Yes, it did pong a bit, but not as bad as Westbrooks Lanolins in Bradford.PS Haven't seen your kid in The Yeoman for a while.     Hi Si,He's still around but he has had a lot of health problems over the past three years and can not get around very easily due to his broken heel, etc. Also, he lives on the other side of town from the Yeoman. Having said that, he was a regular at the Cross Pipes which, as you are aware, has now closed down and is up for sale. I very rarely go in the Yeoman myself, albeit, Helen, the licensee, used to live near to me until she got married. Her parents are friends of my wife and I but now live at Pool.Ian

As a child up to the very early 1950s I used to sometimes play around Stokes and Dalton's at the bottom of Torre Road. I can still mentally smell the delicious aroma of bread being baked. Mmmmm

The lovely smell (and taste) of Virol and the unpleasant smell (or perhaps it just knowing the taste of what was to come when you had it) of Fenning's Fever Cure.
