According to BBC news this morning, the City Sq Xmas tree has been chopped down by council workers in case it should "pose a threat to public safety" during a planned BNP rally. Cost to Leeds council tax payers £2,000.But what struck me most is that the tree was erected on 18th October. 18TH OCTOBER? Gee whizz, I'm not even thinking about Bonfire Night yet!!!!Were I a Leeds taxpayer, I'd be suggesting that the council send the bill to the BNP - it's bragging that there's been loads of extra donations since Question Time.

I am a Leeds taxpayer and I would send the bill to the person who was in charge of putting up the Chrismas tree so early in view of the fact that this protest against muslim extremists has been on the cards since well before the 18th Oct.!

It's that time again. 3rd year running I am first to report before the end of September. They are up on Boar Lane tonight but may have been up since Tuesday, yesterday or just today. I suppose its just 5 or 6 weeks to the switch on Thursday11th??

Oh dear - mind you I was in the supermarket the other day and noticed that mince pies and advent calendars are on the shelves already too. The mince pies had a 'best before' date of early November....

they should put 1 tree up out side the LGI then the fee the celeb should get plus the cost of putting them all up and the massive rents that the council charge for the German market should be donated to cancer research.

I wonder, out of interest, how many of those people of other religions have complained about the lights before? After seeing a margarita glass, could anybody tell me what that has to do with Christmas? This council need to do something spectacular to win people back, emptying a few peoples bins when the bin strike is on isn't good enough. It became our tradition when the kids were young to make the first Monday in December 'Christmas Shopping Day' and I remember well one year, Leeds boasted the best lights in Yorkshire. We stood at the bottom of Briggate and looked up at an amazing arry of lights which did depict our traditions of Christmas. Never again was that repeated, and as they reflect still today, the meaningless and insipid pale greens, blues and yellows mean little.Christmas trees, Christamas lights are all part of our traditions - why shouldn't we follow them in the time honoured way? Because they are a total waste of money. Christmas tree in front of Town Hall with lights on and Merry Christmas in lights end of. No Divali lights, no Hannaka lights no Ede lights. Spend the money on paying the blokes who empty the bins and clear the snow. Not only have our bins not been emptied for a month, but in February no one cleared the snow from our close or the road that leads to it, or the road that leads to that even though it's a bus route. They were probably too busy cutting the grass ...and why do they go up in september and stay till about february? i aggree with you all i have just said to my wife it is so sad ,i belive in my life time some or an amalgamation of religions will try to stop our culture ,i also belive that we being the country will live in will suffer for being a multicultural country and are traditions will or could die.
