Oops! Here it is. Are those Burmantoft's tiles under the new windows? Shame the lamps and signs have gone.

This is the static water tank behind the Market Tavern, mentioned earlier, under construction. I suppose it's still there under the car park? It looks to be there in the 1975 aerial shot at the top of this page, although it's filled-in in the 1947 photo (above.)

I remember a couple of years ago wandering around the market and there being some archaeologists there at the corner of the market tavern was. They had dug very deep down and had uncovered an old stove and a bottle of whiskey that still had some liquid in it, stove was a brick built affair and the guy told me it looked like it was from a cellar dwelling of some sort. There was also an antler from some animal that looks like it was a decorative piece. I asked them what it was about but they didn't tell me. I think now it must have been something to do with the redevelopment of the area.Still now if you go down there you can see in the spot where there is the tarmac missing and the backfill of the stone is still evident.

The old station was pulled down some time in the mid-80s (1984 I think), but it stopped being a police station in 1976 when the new Millgarth was opened. The old Millgarth had been condemned as unsuitable for a modern police force in the late 1960s.At one time the police superintendent lived above the station. Then it got made into a recreation area, and a place where policemen paraded before going on duty. The Union Street baths, just behind Millgarth, were pulled down in the early 1960s.The white tiles that have been talked were those of the Millgarth cells. The site of the old station is now used as a car park by policemen and staff at the new Millgarth.Hope this helps

Right, here we go at last. These pics were taken a couple of weeks ago and show various angles of the Milgarth Police station area. First picture is looking towards the Eastgate roundabout and if you look in the bottom right hand corner it hasn't come out very well on the pic but where the black area of the brickwork is it looks like there is a the start of another building that was once joining the back of the cop shop. Also you can see at the top of the wall it looks like what were the bottoms of windows. The enabled brickwork is on the othjer side of this wall towards the new Milgarth Station.

Close up view of the pic above showing the detail of what looks like the bottom of an old window opening.
