CaronTa, never seen this thread before, and agreedis Woodside Vw, current view http://goo.gl/maps/AbTp The picture is misleadingly referred to as Leeds Power Station. There was one on Whitehall Rd/Aire St in the middle of leeds. This is Kirkstall Power Stn.

As a little lad I remember travelling from Ilkley to Leeds on the train with my Dad quite often, and gazing in awe as the cooling towers were being built - and in later life standing on the roof of Grayson Heights (we were allowed up there then before the nutters started their antics) on the morning that the towers were blown down !!

I lived on Argie Avenue in the late 60's so know the area very well. BLAKEY, I also remember going up onto the roof of Grayson Heights and also Grayson Crest. I sure couldn't do it now as I have a fear of heights, (mind you, I didn't like being up there as a youngster but my older sister was a bit of a bully...lol). However, I only remember the cooling towers and a large "slim" looking chimney, (not all that are in the photo).I really enjoyed the thread and pictures.Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Hi Guys, the above photo is about the exact spot I watched the towers come down. Might have some photos somewhere . As a kid all that area was on my paper round ,from the newsagent on Haddon Rd. Just out of shot on the right is my mates dad house from the 60s and still lives there. the Richardson Family , big RL fan and use to go to Kirkstall rd School .Ps I had to look twice at the chap with the paper, reminded me of the guy who sold the Green Final every Sat around our way.

Do you mean Richardson as in Gail and Graham Richardson ?My sister went to Kirkstall Rd school but I was younger so went to Argie Rd juniors. My sister used to hang around with Paul Fletcher, Colin Baldwin etc. Happy days!

Yep that the family for sure. Graham lives just round the corner om BWD.He knocked around with Fletcher and co , I'm a couple of years older and went to Brudenell.
