I have a theory that modern buildings are covered in the plastic nonsense, not to give them 'character' as the developers might suggest but so they external panels can be changed in a few years time (often at cost to the occupants of the building - check your lease!) to freshen things up. It's not a new trick but it's is very, very common nowadays (Look at the LMU building behind the Civic Hall for example).

As I've said elsewhere from time to time I just can't imagine how planning permission for this "oddity" has been granted. I don't often agree with HRH Prince Charles, but his use of the word "carbuncle" for such things is spot on.Of course there is indeed every need for a south entrance to the station, no one could deny that, but the "space age" appearance of this creation is awful - and I sympathise with the occupants of the nearby flats who no doubt thought that they were moving into an idyllic riverside setting with peaceful views - the nearby lower storeys will now have to forget about that.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I actually think they are correct for once! The Leeds/Liverpool stops at the basin (where the Mint/City Inn is) before Leeds Lock and then the Aire/Calder navigation starts although it is simply the River Aire at that point. The POV of the article does depend on where they are loading and its this that I think they have confused. If they are loading barges from the Water Lane side as they say it would be Leeds/Liverpool though they'd have to use Leeds Lock constantly to get the barges upto the site. Personally I'd load them just before Leeds Bridge, slightly longer trip (minutes though) and saves the hassle/water of constantly using Leeds Lock. That would be using the Aire Calder.Either way, pretty exciting if your into canals (I am!)

Probably a matter of semantics but my consideration of a "navigation" is that it is man made rather than natural river sections. The first man made section is the lock and weir at Crown point and as you point out everything between there and Leeds Lock is river Aire only. The navigation in my eyes would only truly begin at Thwaite Gate. A little further research has shown me that despite not touching the Calder the canal running alongside the Aire from Thwaite gate to Castleford is indeed the Aire and Calder navigation and it is indeed considered to run to Goole docks.

If anyone's interested I'll scan some of them. Yes,that would be of interest.....especially to the Blakey "crew" and me ! Very subtle change from what the YEP has to offer usually my friend.

The first is dated February 27 1984 and the last March 21 1988. In the named one there is 'Old Leeds Cinemas' (part 7, November 10 1986). 'The City Goes To War' (part 8, September 1 1987) and a follow-on 'The City Goes To War Twice' (part 9, November 16 1987). The final one is 'The School Photograph' (part 10, March 21 1988 ).I had to leave a gap after the last 8 in 1988, as otherwise it comes out as 198.

They have funny naming conventions don't they! Either way I'm hoping for some pics as it'd be quite interesting to watch 'modern' workmen unloading from a barge (-:

Well chaps, end of an era is being planned. Johnston Press are hoping to sell the YP building. Yes, its a hole to work in but I'm still sentimentally attached to the old place.I just hope beyond hope beyond hope that JP keep the YP / YEP in Leeds City Centre, not some soulless industrial estate.Anyway, source:http://www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2012/ ... -jp-plans/
